I've always been curious about the tulip mania in The Netherlands during the 17th century: the dramatic tales of connoisseurs and collectors and cash-grabs, the spectacular boom and bust of the bulb bubble, and the fact that the beauty of the most prized variety, the Semper Augustus, was the result of a virus that eventually killed it. The possibility that some or all of these accounts are apocryphal only piques my interest all the more -- tulips bulbs were used as currency, and the stories about them grew and spread and mutated over hundreds of years.
Anyway, here's some gorgeous falling-down tulips I painted for my solo show at Rona Painting Gallery in Jericho this summer:
"Tulpenmanie"
This poppy was the palest pink you can imagine, and confounded my attempts to capture its delicacy. It's like a flighty fairy.
"Flight of Fancy"

"Brighter Days"
30 x 42cm, oil on paper

The trick with peonies is NOT to try to render every last petal... but it's so easy to get lost in there. Dreamy.
"Heart on My Sleeve"
21 x 30 cm, oil on paper
£250 £175
"Peonies in Illy Can"
30 x 40 cm, oil on canvas
£575 (shipping included)
I bought a bouquet of peonies and tried to paint the buds before they exploded into blossom, but these pink petal explosions wait for NO ONE. This one had a particularly feisty personality, which came out in loose bright brushstrokes.
"Wishful Thinking"
20 x 20 cm, oil on canvas
£275 (+ £20 shipping)

I saw this frilly pink carnation at my friend's house and snapped a pic... it was impossible to capture the softness of the petals, but I had fun trying. Also loved the little glass medicine jar, something about the scale and the shape is so evocative.
"Pretty Please"
15 x 21 cm, oil on paper

I get completely lost painting peonies... it's like falling under a spell.
I love the movement of this trio, how they go from bud, to blooming, to exploded. The drama of those petals!
