Tulpenmanie

I've always been curious about the tulip mania in The Netherlands during the 17th century: the dramatic tales of connoisseurs and collectors and cash-grabs, the spectacular boom and bust of the bulb bubble, and the fact that the beauty of the most prized variety, the Semper Augustus, was the result of a virus that eventually killed it. The possibility that some or all of these accounts are apocryphal only piques my interest all the more -- tulips bulbs were used as currency, and the stories about them grew and spread and mutated over hundreds of years.

Anyway, here's some gorgeous falling-down tulips I painted for my solo show at Rona Painting Gallery in Jericho this summer:
