Stormy Spring

There's been snow in Oxford recently, but the daffodils are blooming defiantly. I like the stormy background combined with the cheerful blossoms in this one, and I like how I kept the petals soft and impressionistic.

I tried to keep the brushstrokes loose and unfussy in this one, focusing more on the light and colour. Is there anything more lively than pink and green? A bright painting to keep you going through the winter.

Wishful Thinking

I bought a bouquet of peonies and tried to paint the buds before they exploded into blossom, but these pink petal explosions wait for NO ONE. This one had a particularly feisty personality, which came out in loose bright brushstrokes.

Pretty Please

 I saw this frilly pink carnation at my friend's house and snapped a pic... it was impossible to capture the softness of the petals, but I had fun trying. Also loved the little glass medicine jar, something about the scale and the shape is so evocative.

It probably goes without saying, but it's been slow season for painting. 

I did manage to get a few sessions at the easel, and jumped into the deep end with this outrageously pink and flouncy peony. How is it even standing up in that tiny glass of water?

Heads Up

This piece was half-finished on the easel when the lockdown started 8 weeks ago, and it sat there looking suspended in mid-air -- just how everything else felt.

I finally got some time to finish it, and I love how it manages to be cheerful and heavy at the same time. It's an eye-catcher! Think I'll leave it on the easel a bit longer.

Interlude

Flowers are amazing. Each petal is like a different facet, each facet has a different hue and each hue has a different temperature. I get lost rendering all these subtle shifts, and when I step back it's like light refracting through a prism. Like a gemstone.
