Portrait Painting Weekend Workshop: new dates, January 24-25, 2026

Lucy Stopford and I will be teaching a weekend portrait-painting workshop in January of 2026 -- come paint with us! 

We cover technical and philosophical aspects of painting, with a foundation in colour-mixing and tone alongside emphasis on observation and mark-making. 

 

You'll get live demonstrations from both Lucy and I, as well as plenty of time at your own easel, with opportunities to work from both photo references as well as a live model. Experience is helpful but not required!

Flower Painting Workshop

Besotted by blossoms! I'll happily paint flowers all year long, but I truly love this season when they're all so fresh and sweet and feel like a reward for having successfully mucked through the winter. 

I've learned a lot about painting flowers over the past couple of years, and I'm excited to pass on my revelations: colour mixing, mark-making, paint layering, and building an interesting composition will all be part of my next day-long workshop at the studios. Come paint with me!

This 6-hour workshop will take an impressionistic approach to painting flowers, using colour and value to render our subject. I'll give a live demonstration in the morning, and set you to your own compositions in the afternoon. Experience helpful but not required!

Dutch Treat

 I love black parrot tulips so much that I grew some of my own just so I could paint them. This background isn't William Morris, but is an anonymous fabric swatch I've had forever and have been too precious to use in actual sewing. So I thought I'd paint that, too! The little Dutch windmill vase I found at a charity shop and it felt like a perfect pairing.

 More sweet cherry blossoms -- this time against a blue William Morris background. I'm fascinated by his story, he studied at Oxford and was quite the polymath: in addition to designing wallpaper and fabric, he was a social activist, a poet, and an aspiring architect. He insisted that art and well-designed interiors were not luxuries, which of course I appreciate.

I am playing around with flowers on patterned backgrounds, challenging myself to make a distinction between the real flower and the flower pattern while keeping both soft and impressionistic.

Lucy Stopford and I are teaching another weekend portrait-painting workshop! 

A full weekend of portraiture is intensive and challenging, but our approach is suitable for painters at all levels of experience -- we cover technical (and philosophical!) foundations of painting as well as the importance of pushing boundaries and expressive mark-making. It's exhilarating, and I get something new out of it each time.

Painting the Face -- again!

Lucy Stopford and I are teaming up again for another portrait painting workshop at the Magdalen Art Space. 

You'll get two full days of painting, including live demos from each of us in the mornings and time to work on your own composition in the afternoons. I'll be using a photographic reference, and Lucy will use a live model, so you'll get an opportunity to try both. 

We both come from a foundational approach of using tone/value to understand and build up the head and features in paint, and we both work with oils using the Zorn palette. But we each have different styles and different outcomes, which means you'll get lots of practical guidance and the freedom to explore your own mark-making and approach. 

The workshop will take place over the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, 23-24 November, 2024, from 11am - 4pm. The cost is £150 for both days, and will include some materials, but we encourage you to bring your own supplies if you can (we will send a full list of materials when you book). Experience helpful but not required!

We'll be working in the Magdalen Art Space at the Magdalen Road Studios, which is near the Pegasus Theatre off Iffley Road. Tulpenmanie

I've always been curious about the tulip mania in The Netherlands during the 17th century: the dramatic tales of connoisseurs and collectors and cash-grabs, the spectacular boom and bust of the bulb bubble, and the fact that the beauty of the most prized variety, the Semper Augustus, was the result of a virus that eventually killed it. The possibility that some or all of these accounts are apocryphal only piques my interest all the more -- tulips bulbs were used as currency, and the stories about them grew and spread and mutated over hundreds of years.

Anyway, here's some gorgeous falling-down tulips I painted for my solo show at Rona Painting Gallery in Jericho this summer:

Stormy Spring

There's been snow in Oxford recently, but the daffodils are blooming defiantly. I like the stormy background combined with the cheerful blossoms in this one, and I like how I kept the petals soft and impressionistic.
