Interlude

Flowers are amazing. Each petal is like a different facet, each facet has a different hue and each hue has a different temperature. I get lost rendering all these subtle shifts, and when I step back it's like light refracting through a prism. Like a gemstone.

Before You Go

I love it when flowers are slightly past their prime and starting to fall over, they're so much more interesting. I also loved how these were lit from behind, and it caught the yellow base of the petals in the foremost flower... like a sweet secret.

In a Way

I carved out a few hours at the easel the other day, for this sweet rose bud. Not sure if I like the bud or the vase better... both were scrumptious to paint.

Held, Loosely

I thought these lilies would be an easy composition, with their large broad petals... but white flowers with frills are tricky no matter what size. Third try was the charm with these:

Here is my first try, not enough subtlety in the tonal changes, and somehow the petals got stripey:

And the second try, in a rush and a huff:

Be persistent, be stubborn! But not on the same day!

Alone Together

I managed to get one more painting out of these Gerbera daisies before they wilted... this time a simpler composition with a more complicated vase.

Bright Bunch

As long as we’re working in close quarters, my dad and I are going to engage in a bit of friendly competition (as well as grumbling in commiseration when the materials won’t cooperate).

The last post was his version of the pink Gerbera daisies, and here is mine:

Sharing a studio with Robin has been a joy and a challenge. And by challenge, I mean: Game On! Here is the first result of our DDP Smackdown: We set up the flowers and let the paint fall where it may. I was trying to capture the color and contrasts in this image.
