I Danced at Your Wedding

I found these vintage shoes in a thrift shop years ago, and could not pass them up even though they are half a size too small for me. Last time I wore them was at a friend’s wedding about 17 years ago — they looked amazing and they gave me memorable blisters.

I still can’t bear to part with them, so now they’re art.

Camellia

Somehow this camellia looks even more elegant in her decomposition. I loved painting the edges all dried out and papery.

Fairytale

I snapped a pic of these roses from the cemetery near our house, where CS Lewis happens to be buried. Oh, my storybook English neighbourhood...

Apple and Tree

The neighbours behind us have an apple tree whose boughs hang over the wall into our garden. Usually the fruit falls under the trampoline and makes a saucy compost, but this year I swiped a few and painted them. I had to work quickly because the leaves wilted right before my eyes. Patterned backdrop for extra challenge.

To the Root

My brother grew this radish in his container garden over the summer. Isn’t it perfect?

Declaration

It probably goes without saying, but it's been slow season for painting.

I did manage to get a few sessions at the easel, and jumped into the deep end with this outrageously pink and flouncy peony. How is it even standing up in that tiny glass of water?

Quiet Wild

I have been scrolling through ceramicist Fi Chappelle's feed again, because I love her work as well as how beautifully she presents it. The vessel is just as decorative as the flowers.

I got such a feeling from this one -- moody but self-possessed, wild but delicate.

Heads Up

This piece was half-finished on the easel when the lockdown started 8 weeks ago, and it sat there looking suspended in mid-air -- just how everything else felt.

I finally got some time to finish it, and I love how it manages to be cheerful and heavy at the same time. It's an eye-catcher! Think I'll leave it on the easel a bit longer.

Birthday

I got this bouquet for my birthday last year, and it was so delicate and romantic that I took a bunch of pictures of it so I could paint it later...

Pray Tell

Have you ever seen green roses? I had not.

I fussed and fussed over lime-y yellows and grey greens and bright chartreuse... I don't know if I got the hues quite right, but it was really about the tiny hint of pink amidst the greens that made the whole cantilevered arrangement so exquisite.
