One and the Same
I am playing around with flowers on patterned backgrounds, challenging myself to make a distinction between the real flower and the flower pattern while keeping both soft and impressionistic.
Flower Painting Workshop
The snowdrops and crocuses and daffodils are already coming up -- it's Oxford's 'fake spring' -- which puts me in a mood to paint flowers! I'll be teaching a workshop at the studios in April, hopefully it will be real spring by then.
I've got lots of new ideas and tips to share, hope you'll join me:
This 6-hour workshop will take an impressionistic approach to painting flowers, using colour and value to render our subject. We will also experiment with blending, layering, and expressive mark-making. I'll give a live demonstration in the morning, and set you to your own compositions in the afternoon. Experience helpful but not required!

Painting the Face, April 2025
Lucy Stopford and I are teaching another weekend portrait-painting workshop!
A full weekend of portraiture is intensive and challenging, but our approach is suitable for painters at all levels of experience -- we cover technical (and philosophical!) foundations of painting as well as the importance of pushing boundaries and expressive mark-making. It's exhilarating, and I get something new out of it each time.
